Best Books For 1 And 2 Year Olds

Reading to 1 and 2 year old babies, boys and girls, is really important to help increase their vocabulary and to foster a love of books. Books for these children are a lot more interactive than their first baby books and use things like repetative language and a variety of visual formats to catch their attention. There are a vast number of books available to this age group but here are some of our favourites. It doesn’t matter if the child you are buying for is a boy or a girl since the majority of these books will appeal to both.


Spot books by Eric Hill. Spot the Dog is a much loved children’s book and is extremely popular with young children. Probably the best known book in the series is ‘Wheres Spot’ but there are many more. See the full list of Spot books with prices.

Peepo by Janet and Allen Ahlberg. Another favourite. Lots of detail in the pictures which means plenty to talk about with young children. Each page has a hole in it so you can say peepo at the baby before seeing the whole picture. More Info and Price.

Hairy Maclary from Donaldsons Dairy – the most popular book in a series by Lynley Dodd about a dog called Hairy McClary. Lots of repetition in the stories which are simple but fun. Full List of Hairy Maclary Books.

Dig Dig Digging by Margaret Mayo is part of the Awesome Engines series. It appeals to babies and 1 year olds because of the bright pictures and simple text which also rhymes. Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell is a classic lift the flap book which has been around since 1982. It has been a favourite for 1 and 2 year olds ever since. Now available in multiple formats, the original board book is still the one we would want. Dear Zoo Prices

The Going to Bed Book by Sarah Boynton makes going to bed fun. Its about a boat full of animals and their going to bed routine. The illustration are bright and the text rhymes. Kippers Toy Box by Mike Inkpen. Kipper is a much loved favourite with toddlers and a fun character to introduce to slightly older 1 year olds. There are lots of Kipper the dog stories. More Kipper Books

The Very Hungry Catepillar (board Book) by Eric Carle). Another classic still loved by 1 year old children. The story is simple and easy to follow for young children. The Axel Scheffler Pocket Library. A set of 4 board books with Pip The Puppy, Lizzy the Lamb, Katie the Kitten and Freddie the Frog.
